CHENNAI: The AIADMK and the BJP on Saturday walked out of the state legislative assembly during the special session, protesting the move to reintroduce 10 Bills “withheld and returned” by governor R N Ravi.
AIADMK MLAs led by Edappadi K Palaniswami walked out after making certain remarks on a Bill passed by his government to rechristen Tamil NaduFisheries University as Dr J Jayalalithaa Fisheries University in 2020.The remarks were expunged by speaker M Appavu. Incidentally, this was one of the 10 Bills returned by the governor readopted by the assembly after the AIADMK and BJP MLAs walked out.
Soon after the walk out, Appavu clarified that the Bill adopted by the AIADMK government was one of the returned Bills.
“They have walked out by placing the wrong information. Though they have snapped ties with the BJP, there is an undercurrent. So, if you oppose the governor, it is like opposing (Narendra) Modi. So, they have given a reason for not being here and walked out. The cat’s out of the bag,” senior minister Duraimurugan said. Fisheries minister Anitha S Radhakrishnan said the chief minister had always been determined not to change the institutions or programmes being run in the name of late leaders.
The BJP legislators too walked out, alleging that the resolution moved by chief minister M K Stalin against the governor for returning the Bills was unconstitutional. Speaking on the resolution, BJP floor leader Nainar Nagendran said the DMK regime in 1998 passed a resolution that the governors should be vested with powers to appoint the vice-chancellors but now the resolution was being moved to empower the CM.
There were two Bills passed in the state assembly related to the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University. One passed during the previous AIADMK regime in January 2010 to rechristen the university after Jayalalithaa and the second one passed in April this year to curtail the power of the governor in appointing vice-chancellors. The governor did not give assent to both the Bills.
Later, interacting with reporters in Coimbatore, Palaniswami said during the AIADMK regime, the government named the fisheries university as Tamil Nadu Dr Jayalalithaa fisheries university. But it was renamed as Tamil Nadu Fisheries University after DMK assumed office.
Finance minister Thangam Thennarasu told reporters that the AIADMK had given “lame reasons” for walking out of the assembly and it exposed the “secret relationship” between that party and the BJP.
“The DMK without any political vendetta readopted the Bill that was intended to name the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University after Jayalalithaa, and the AIADMK should have appreciated the state government for the Bill,” Thangam Thennarasu said.
Former AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam, while welcoming the resolution to readopt the 10 Bills, criticised Palaniswami and the AIADMK for walking out.
“Without even knowing that the (fisheries university) Bill was readopted, they have walked out of the assembly,” OPS said.
