Bengaluru: India’s Rohan Bopanna and Aussie Matthew Ebden, the third seeds in the Nitto ATP Finals, bowed out of the championships in Turin on Saturday, letting slip the opportunity to claim the year-end No.1 ranking.
The fifth seeds Spaniard Marcel Granollers and Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos came up with solid tennis to shut the door on the Indo-Aussie combine 5-7, 4-6 in the last-four stage. The Spanish-Argentine duo, who led the head-to-head 2-1 coming into the semifinal clash, broke the Aussie in the 11th game of the opening set and struck again in the third game of the second set. There was no looking back from there.
Bopanna and Ebden, who beat the fifth seeds in their last meeting in Paris, looked the better side for most of the opening set. The third seeds had to reach the final to pass the already-eliminated Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek, who are in top spot. Should Granollers and Zeballos lift the trophy on Sunday, they move up to the No.1 spot.
