Bengaluru: The residents of Bhuvanagiri area in OMBR Layout find it difficult to walk on the roads. Reason: Mounds of garbage!
With people dumping trash by the roadside and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) turning a blind eye to the problem, the stench emanating from the garbage has become unbearable, say residents.
The residents alleged that BBMP hasn’t collected and transported the garbage piled up in Bhuvanagiri market area and also in front of Bhuvanagiri public park for the past few days.
Some citizens have compounded the mess by dropping household waste and leftover food on pavements and roads in the locality.
“We’ve called ward-level BBMP officials and they assured us they would clear the garbage soon. But the garbage has not been removed and we’re forced to breathe bad air,” said Kamalesh, a provision shop owner.
Somasekhar, a resident, said it is impossible to walk on the streets in the locality. “We can’t walk confidently on the streets, we risk stepping up on trash and falling. It won’t take much time for these dirty spots to be become black ones,” he said, adding that the civic body should increase awareness among residents. Residents also said BBMP should deploy marshals near garbage-dumping places and heavily penalize on those throwing muck in open spaces.
When contacted by TOI, BBMP officials admitted that garbage has piled up near the park for the past four days as the waste-picking vehicle is under repair.
“We’ll clear the garbage by evening (on Friday) and will ban throwing garbage near the park,” Raghunath, Banas- wadi ward health inspector promised.

Mexico’s Acapulco hit by garbage pile-up after deadly hurricane
Residents of Acapulco, Mexico, are facing a new problem in the aftermath of Hurricane Otis: piles of garbage lining the streets. The storm, which was the strongest to hit Mexico’s Pacific coast, caused major flooding and destruction, resulting in heaps of trash outside homes. Despite the government’s efforts to clean up the city, residents claim that the garbage is accumulating rapidly, causing traffic disruptions. The situation has raised concerns about the spread of diseases like dengue, as stagnant water from blocked drainage could breed mosquitoes.

The ‘CM Swachh Mumbai WhatsApp Helpline’ launched by the BMC has received 8,445 complaints in just five months. The majority of the complaints (6,486) are related to garbage disposal, while around 2,000 complaints are about debris and construction waste. The BMC has recently added a new category for waste burning complaints. Some residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the helpline, citing difficulties in registering complaints and lack of user-friendliness. The BMC’s central helpline remains operational for complaints via phone calls. Lack of awareness about proper waste disposal is a contributing factor to the problem.
