Bengaluru: Customs sleuths on Friday nabbed a Kerala man attempting to smuggle in over 1kg of gold paste, worth Rs 68 lakh. The smuggler had landed at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on a flight from Muscat, Oman.
Sources with the air intelligence unit of Bengaluru Customs said the smuggling attempt unfolded Friday morning. The sleuths were carrying out passenger profiling of those disembarking from Oman Air flight WY 281, which touched down in Bengaluru at 9.05am.
The sleuths intercepted a male passenger, later identified as a 32-year-old native of Kozhikode in Kerala. An inspection of his handbag revealed a small waist belt pouch that contained gold in paste form. The investigators seized the smuggled gold, which was weighed and ascertained to be 1,113 grams, carrying a market value of over Rs 68 lakh.
The smuggler was arrested. Further probe is under way to find if he was acting alone or part of an international gold smuggling racket, sources said.

The kidnappers robbed him of gold worth Rs 50 lakh, which he had smuggled into the country. The victim had flown to Dubai at the behest of a friend’s father and concealed the gold capsules in his rectum. After landing in Ahmedabad, he was taken to a secluded spot, beaten, and forced to hand over the gold. The investigation is underway.

The DRI found the heroin hidden in a secret cabin in Dawes’ hand luggage. In a separate incident, customs officers seized two kg of gold worth Rs 1.25 crore from two women who arrived from Malaysia. The women are believed to have been used as couriers. Investigations are ongoing in both cases.
