UDUPI: A 39-year-old senior cabin crew member employed with an airline has been arrested in connection with the murder of four members of a family that shocked Udupi in Karnataka on Sunday.
Praveen Arun Chougule, who is from Sangli in Maharashtra, was arrested based on technical evidence and human intelligence, said Udupi SP Arun K. He was picked up from Kudachi PS limits in Belagavi on Tuesday, and admitted to the murders, the SP said.
Chougule has been remanded in police custody for 13 days. The motive for the murders was yet to be established, said police. “Preliminary investigation points to two or three motives, and we are yet to verify the motive that the accused has confessed to,” the SP added. The accused is a married man.
A 45-year-old woman and her three children were found brutally murdered at their house in Tripti Layout of Nejar in Malpe police station limits.
The deceased were identified as Haseena, her daughters Afnan (23) and Ainaz (21), and son Aaseem (12). Hajira, Haseena’s 70-year-old mother-in-law, escaped with minor injuries.
Ainaz was an airhostess, and she and Praveen were colleagues, police said. Chougule claimed that he intended to attack Ainaz and the others got killed while trying to save her.
Cops got their first clue when they questioned Ainaz’s colleagues and noted Chougule’s absence from work. He was on the Dammam flight on Friday and was missing after that day. “It was a premeditated murder. We hope to file a chargesheet soon and recover the murder weapon,” the SP said.
